Coupons are highly over-rated. My cheapest store for groceries doesn’t even accept coupons, but the overall savings are worth it. Store brands are generally less expensive and don’t normally offer coupons.

One of the best ways to save on groceries is focusing on substitutions where you can. For example buying window cleaner and paper towels can be expensive items. Instead a reusable cotton towel can be greener and cheaper. It can save you a dollar in paper towels each time a child spills their drink. Making your own window cleaning solution with a little ammonia and a touch of dish soap can save $100 a year, instead of buying the 2 dollar bottle of glass cleaner each week.

I’ve found if I buy cheap cereal, the kids won’t eat it, and mom dishes out more expensive breakfast options, like bagels. Buying the name brand cereal may be slightly more expensive, but it drops the overall grocery bill. There are a lot more meals in a box of cereal, than a bag of bagels. Other things like the no-name orange juice becomes an acquired taste after a few weeks. My children would sit and drink a ridiculous amount of whole milk, and switching to skim milk not only reduced the grocery bill, but improved their health. Now instead of grabbing a glass of milk in the summer they grab a glass of water.

Also depending on where you live, tap water is a free drink. Keep an old plastic milk container full of water in the fridge. Water tastes great when it’s cold, and keeps them away from the milk, juice, and soda (if you buy it)

  3. I really appreciate your comment. However many people have saved tons of money by using coupons. The coupons are used for named brand products, therefore you can still get the good stuff (quality) for a lower price. However I must admit, couponing can be very time consuming.

Those of you that are living the frugal life, do you find that it is not worth the time investment for getting coupons.
